You know what they COULD upgrade every season? Servers and supporting infrastructure. If, as you say, "there isn't a whole lot they can add", then they should have plenty of operational capacity to invest the time in improving gameplay consistency. Instead, they see this as an opportunity to cut cost because they have exclusive rights to the NFL and zero incentive to spend money to improve the experience.
