To fully complete a "Challenge", do you need to get 5 stars for every challenge within the main challenge?

Thanks for the info. Problem is I suck and can't complete a lot of them on the hardest level. Part of it is my team--My wife's been very ill so I have very little time to grind solos. At this point my team sucks even more than I do. I have about 300K in coins: any advice on what players would be the biggest difference-makers at this point? Obviously, I don't want to blow the whole 300 on 1 or2 star players, but spread it out a bit to strengthen my team the best I can. I'd really appreciate any advice you might have.

Needing all stars to complete a challenge is a fact, whether or not you should do that is an opinion

Im confused with this whole star system... Ive beat all the challenges in "assemble your team" but its still there, and there's a few challenges that don't have a "check" mark...
