Touchdown vs Field Goal

In close games, i can't decide whether to go for it on like 4th and 1 - 4th and 4 and i usually go for it and fail but sometimes i do make it. if i fail, sometimes in the game it comes back to hurt me, as maybe i would have won with a fg. but i never know when to go for it or just kick. i lost a game to a guy usually in the top 10 of weekend league by 1 yesterday because i decided to kick two field goals on 4th and 1 (lost 14-13). how do you guys decide whether to kick or go for it?

heatgotgame125

The rule is take the points unless you have to go for it. Not kicking FG can make a would be 14-6 game a 14-0 game.

Unless you have a play that you're confident will work (which is tricky given how random this game is) I say take the points. I fall into this sometimes and more times than not it does bite me in the ass. In some situations you do have to go for it, but in general you gotta take the points. I've lost many games where I went for it several times and failed. The opponent had meh offense, but solid defense, and end up losing by a small margin.

Nerf_herder27

Always take the points...unless you know you can't get a stop on them. If they are scoring TD's on you every drive, then you probably gotta go for it.

Depends on the situation and my opponent. I notice that towards the end of the game I find myself down by 3 or less when I had passed up on a Field Goal prior

rarelyysober420

If its 4th and 3 or less aways go for it if your near midfield or in scoring position... if your backed up in your own side of the field or its 4th and 4 or more i would kick

bbrewer23goblue

Early in the game im always taking the points

Colony

Really it depends how im playing and status of the game and my opponent.if I have a lead before halftime and know I will get ball again at start of 2nd half, I will just take my FG. If im down, i may go for it.

Really just depends on how well you are playing on offense and defense. There are times you have to be aggressive and times to be conservative.

Grogu

Depends on time remaining, if 2 min left go for it. 30 seconds left, kick

rka7731

what about earlier in the game?

Grogu

Depends on down and distance

It’s a video game let it fly on fourth

salicagg

If you take it seriously, then it’s a risk and return decision. If you realize it’s just a videogame, let’s have some fun and try the TD.

deckj2

They got DDA, equalizers, and all this other crap in the game but no penalty for going for 4th downs outside of needed situations. People that play this game have no real football IQ and are try hard ASF. I rarely play people that punt or go for FG's and EA aids these clowns. I play sim so I kick FG's but no matter what their NFL agreement says this ain't no sim football game so I don't even know why I play this POS

prodigy_3600

Why should there be a penalty for going for 4th down? If you want it realistic don’t ask for that

user789540

There was a drop penalty last year for going for it on 4th down. Not the case this year.

rka7731

i think he means like it should be a bit harder to convert on 4th and long

Fender2007Guy

Maybe a confidence meter like the show but for your QB

von11

Depends...if I'm committed to going the distance (playing a full game) I'm kicking the FG every time. If it is my first drive of the game and I got the ball first I'm kicking the FG and than playing D to see if they can move it. If my opponent gets the ball first and drives it with no issues than I'm going for it as I know I'm in a shoot out. If you lost 14-13 in the 4th then it may have been clock management or your defense that lost the game, not the FG. If I'm playing to practice and not to win then I'm never kicking or punting.

kandiman38

I generally don't like to go for it when I'm on my own side of the field. Once I get to my 40 though, I start thinking about, all depends on if the person I'm playing has a specific play or scheme they're running over and over. Usually will only go for it on 4th if it's 5 or less yards, including when I get into my opponents side of the field. Saw someone below also mention this, once I get inside the 10 or the next first down is within the 5 yd line of my opponent ill usually kick the fg because I do find it difficult to punch it in at times that close.

user789540

Make your protocols and stick with them. Do you want to kick a FG on 4th and 2 when down by 1 with 2:30 left in the game? What about if your up by 6 or up by 3? You just gotta live with your decisions.

Lawrence11

I always go for it on 4th down unless it’s at the end of half, the end of the game, or if It’s 4th and long inside my 20. I’m a offensive player so that’s my mindset. Plus I hate kicking field goals

rka7731

does it work?

Lawrence11

For the most part yeah. I wish they kept a stat of 4th down percentage in the leaderboards though

AustinP53

I find it tough to score sometimes where you’re close to the red zone (within 10 yards) because these stacked defences just stack the boxes and I’d take the field goal usually bearing I’m not behind 2 scores or anything

rka7731

yup, i agree with this. i find it easier to score from 20-30 yards out vs 10. i normally run a spacing concept inside the 10 but if they play man i'm screwed and usually end up forcing a throw that gets intercepted by their acrobats

Fender2007Guy

Use math to figure out which is more beneficial. If you're down by 2 points, field goal for sure, if you're down by 3, it really depends on your defense and their offense.

rka7731

sometimes i'll be down like 13 or something and i'll go for it and miss and then have another chance for a fg and a td and wish that i would have kicked it originally. so it's kinda hard to do math for that lol

Fender2007Guy

If you're down that far, don't sweat it, go for it and have fun with it.
