Sports Card Digest Pt. 2. Most Valuable Cards

Last week I talked about the history and values of cards, This week I wanted to highlight the most expensive cards each of the 4 majors sports., Almost a Collectors dream I highlighted each of the four sports. and Snagged a few Gems that are what most collectors drool over. I avoided rare commodities that are almost a one off AKA Honus Wagner and the Gretzky Honus Wagner, But what are commonly found amongst collectors as some of the Holy Grail.

1) 1965 Topps Football Joe Namath #122

This is probably the most expensive Football card ever in Excellent condition, the 1965 Topps set was strangely peculiar, offering cards in a 2 1/2 x 4 11/16 set. Often referred to as "tall boys" In 1965 the AFL was still in its infancy and the Philadelphia Gum Co. (Bowman) had the stranglehold on the rights to produce the much more popular NFL cards. Topps answered by getting the rights to the AFL. These cards were in short print due to the limited interest in the AFL and quality issues. The cuts being off center, poor photos  and printing flaws However Broadway Joe's Rookie Card leads the way with this set. The other issue is finding them in great shape, fewer than 700 show grades better than a PSA 9, as kids ran to the store to buy these cards it doesn't say anywhere on it that they were AFL Cards tearing them open in hopes to find Bart Starrs or Johnny Unitas only to have their hearts broken to realize it was just the "AFL" set. Storage of the oversized cards was also a challenge.
