To use your Captain Upgrade token, you need to first select your Team Captain from either your Item Binder or your lineup screen, and choose the upgrade option.
You'll be able to use your upgrade token on your captain from there, but you have to have him at at least a 90 OVR first. So get ready to spend some training points if, as you say, you have him currently at an 86.
